Combining Raman
and infrared sensing on a single die

MIEYRA is being developed to combine Raman with NIR or MIR within the same semiconductor-scale platform.

By combining complementary sensing signals, we aim to improve the detection and monitoring of biomarkers, hazardous materials and environments across fitness, wearables, defence and security applications.

Why multimodal?

No single technology sees everything. Every sensing modality has strengths and limitations.

Raman excels at molecular fingerprinting and chemical identification, while NIR and MIR provide access to absorption signatures that may be weak or inaccessible through Raman alone.

Combining these approaches has the potential to:
Increase measurement confidence
Improve sensitivity to key biomarkers
Improve identification confidence in hazardous-material applications
Support measurements in complex, real-world environments
Expand the range of detectable biomarkers
Rather than relying on a single sensor type, multimodal sensing creates a richer picture of the target being measured.
Biomarker monitoring

A future opportunity for wearables

Many biomarkers can be measured in the laboratory using combinations of skin, sweat and optical techniques. PhovIR is exploring how non-invasive Raman and NIR sensing could bring more of this capability into wearable devices, with our development programme evaluating whether the combined modalities can improve measurement confidence across hydration, lipids, metabolic indicators and exercise-related biochemical changes.

Potential benefits include:
Potential for improved measurement confidence
Greater resilience to environmental variation
Non-invasive monitoring through skin and sweat
Enhanced confidence through sensor fusion
Broader range of potentially measurable biomarkers
This forms part of our longer-term roadmap for wearable and human-performance applications.
Data fusion benefits

Better decisions through more data

We believe the greatest value will not come from any single sensor, but from combining multiple sensing methods with chemometrics and AI/ML data analysis.

Future multimodal systems could use data fusion techniques to:
Cross-validate measurements
Improve identification confidence
Detect weaker signals
Generate richer biological and chemical insights
Enable real-time decision support
This approach is central to our vision for next-generation sensing platforms.
